Summer 2024 Book Reviews

Title: Paris: The Memoir *RRN
Author: Paris Hilton
Rating: 4.3/5
Comments: Paris is a QUEEN. This woman has been through hell and back so anyone who has anything bad to say about her can kiss my ass. I knew most of her story from her documentary but hearing her words as I listened to this in her own (natural) voice was heartbreaking. She is so strong and deserves so much happiness. The way she does not blame her parents for sending her to these psychiatric “schools” is so admirable because I don’t know if I could be so forgiving. She is also so unexpectedly talented, so intelligent, and so strategic when it comes to making both personal and professional decisions. She created this persona with the baby voice and “acting” dumb and in turn, she is not given the credit she deserves for being a badass woman in this world.

Title: Maybe Someday
Author: Colleen Hoover
Rating: 4.2/5
Comments: In the words of Claudia Oshry, “You could never make me hate [Ridge].” I really enjoyed this. It felt different and yet relatable. Sydney is recently single and Ridge has a girlfriend but the moment these two begin making music together, the chemistry is undeniable. I truly felt like I had no idea what the outcome would be and I loved that surprise for me. The real MVP of the book is Warren, Ridge’s roommate and lifelong bff. He is the friend who you can’t really take seriously and is always sleeping around but really has a heart of gold and the best advice. Give me a book from Warren’s POV. Totally recommend as an easy read full of depth and emotion.

Title: The Coworker
Author: Freida McFadden
Rating: 3.6/8
Comments: Didn’t love. It’s about Natalie’s strange coworker Dawn going missing. We get the story from both of their POVs and for most the time, I feel so badly for Dawn. She is a little quirky and does not naturally fit in. The whole book is trying to find out what happens to Dawn but I did not feel that satisfied with the ending. You can skip this one. Want to pick up a McFadden novel? Grab The Inmate (or The Housemaid which is supposed to be stellar).

Title: The Teacher
Author: Freida McFadden
Rating: 3.8/5
Comments: This book had me so uncomfortable the entire time I was reading it and I kept thinking “I don’t know if I can get through this.” But of course the desire to know the ending kept me going and WOW, it did not disappoint. I knew two of the twists were coming but the epilogue’s twist… it really got it. I would almost say this book is worth reading just because of the ending. But most of the book, I felt annoyed at how dumb everyone is. The decisions they make, the lies they fall for, the far-fetchedness of it all, plus the discomfort I felt while listening had me so annoyed the entire time. But worth it once answers are revealed.

Title: Home is Where the Bodies Are
Author: Jeneva Rose
Rating: 3.9/5
Comments:
I really enjoyed this! Three siblings reunite after the passing of their mother only to discover some secrets while watching a home movie. Beth, the oldest is there when their mother passes and keeps her mother’s final words close to her chest. Nicole, the middle child has been addicted to drugs most of her list but is clearly the smartest of them all. Michael, the youngest, hasn’t talked to either of his sisters in years and keeps things mysterious. During their childhood, a young girl goes missing and her murder was never solved. The siblings find out more than just the truth about their family. It’s a quick, easy read and another hit by Rose, who is the author of The Perfect Marriage.

Title: Bright Young Women
Author: Jessica Knoll
Rating: 4.1/5
Comments: This was really different than any book I’ve ever read- mostly because I prefer thrillers. It’s set in a decade (the 70s) I rarely read about in a setting I never read about (the Pacific Northwest). Women are getting murdered all over the country including a young woman named Ruth who goes missing while at the beach with her friend Tina. Across the country, Pamela Schumacher, FSU sorority president, survives the brutal attack on her sorority house when several of her sisters get killed. Tina believes the same monster committed both acts and links up with Pamela to get answers. Over four decades, the unlikely duo never gives up on finding the truth. The story is so moving and shows how badass women are, sexuality acceptance (or lack of) in the 70s and how far we’ve come (yet still need to go), and even though the world is cruel and unsafe, there is so much power in love and friendship.

Title: Confess
Author: Colleen Hoover
Rating: 4.2/5
Comments: This might be my new favorite Hoover book. I loved it. I found myself rooting for Owen Gentry, one of the main characters, like I rooted for Atlas in It Ends with Us. I feel like I don’t even have words to describe why I love this book. The characters (Owen and Auburn). Their families. Their priorities. Their needs versus their wants. Their undeniable connection. And the ending? I have not been that surprised in a long time. It was such a moment. Definitely add this to your list.

Title: The Perfect Couple
Author: Elin Hilderbrand
Rating: 4.2/5
Comments: I really enjoyed it. Most Hilderbrand books I’ve read do not include any mystery so that made this even more enjoyable. Of course, I only read it because of the impending Netflix show starring Nicole Kidman and Elle Fanning, and now I am counting down the days for the release (which is September 5 for those wondering). The story centers around a couple about to get married in Nantucket but the dynamics of their families and friendships really complicate things. The characters are mysterious and dynamic and I am eager to see them come to life onscreen.

Title: She’s Not Sorry
Author: Mary Kubica
Rating: 3.8/5
Comments:
Truthfully, I could not remember this book until I looked it up again on Goodreads five seconds ago. But with the refresher, I remember it’s not that bad. When Meghan Michaels, a single mom and overnight nurse, becomes overly invested in one of her patients in a coma, it gets pretty sticky. There were several shock factors, which I always appreciate. It’s crazy the things people will do to to keep the truth from being exposed. Meghan and the story itself are not that interesting and I don’t think it’s Kubica’s best, but it’s not terrible.

Title: Bye, Baby
Author: Carola Lovering
Rating: 4/5
Comments: Some people only care about people who are going to take them to the next level and that’s the truth about Cassie Barnwell. She doesn’t deserve a friend like Billie West. What an unpleasant character Cassie is to get to know. The social media influencer and boutique owner is selfish, mean, and uses everyone for their power or connections. One night her baby goes missing and only then does she soften up and give refocus her priorities. She allows herself to get close to her childhood friend Billie again who has only ever loved Cassie and done everything for her. Cassie is the worst kind of woman but I enjoyed reading about her curated life. I loved Tell Me Lies and once Girl With No Job recommended this book, I had to grab it. Add it to your TBR list for sure!

Title: The Rumor
Author: Elin Hilderbrand
Rating: 4.1/5
Comments: This is the first book in the Hilderbrand’s Nantucket series which includes The Perfect Couple ^^. I really enjoyed it. There is nothing like a small town story full of whispers and gossip and affairs and young love. Two best friends, Madeline and Grace, have their friendship tested when one of their daughter’s breaks the other’s son’s heart and one little secret gets exposed. This story gives us an FBI raid, a hot landscaper, a nosy realtor, twin high school girls who could not be more different, and so much more. Definitely read!!

Title: The Last Mrs. Parrish *RRN
Author: Liv Constantine
Rating: 4.5/5
Comments; LOVED. I have seen this book for years and years and finally used my Spotify listening hours to read it. Wow. There is Amber who befriends Daphne with some insane ulterior motives during the first part of the book. Then the second half of the book is BAM- a total shock. All throughout, there is Daphne’s husband Jackson who is a businessman known for his good looks, power, and money. I feel like I cannot say anymore without giving it all away. But I will always love an unassuming underdog. Put this at the top of your list. I am so excited to read the sequel The Next Mrs. Parrish.
