Grateful for the little things

I try to always be aware of really good moments. Whether I’m out with friends and we’re screaming a song at the top of our lungs or I’m walking along the Farmington surrounded by so much nature, I always try to consciously think: “This is a really good moment and I am so lucky to be here.”

It’s so easy to get caught up in our struggles and to put too much energy into the unworthy or insignificant. But it’s actually kind of hard to acknowledge and appreciate the moments that make each day different. To an extent, every day is the same because we have shit to do and jobs to keep but it’s the little things that remind us that life is more than our routines and responsibilities.

These are just a few little things that I am grateful for amongst life’s harder moments:

  • Birds chirping in the morning
  • The smell after rain
  • Open windows
  • A hot cup of coffee
  • Sunday morning Acoustic Sunrise
  • Clean, crisp sheets
  • A really good breakfast sandwich
  • The sound of waves crashing
  • Extra cheesy nachos
  • Thunderstorms
  • A clean car
  • Checking something off a list
  • A herd of deer
  • A fresh manicure
  • My mom’s sauce
  • A good book
  • Rainbows
  • A conversation with a stranger
  • Dolphins breaching the ocean
  • Houseplant growth
  • Placing the last piece of a puzzle
  • The sound of a cork popping
  • Stretching before getting out of bed
  • An extra beautiful sunset

As I read this list, I am noticing how many of these things are sensory for me; hearing the birds, tasting the nachos, feeling the sheets, seeing the deer, smelling the sauce… It’s so interesting how being aware of your senses in a particular moment can bring so much comfort and so much gratitude.

Maybe you’re not loving your job or you’ve been fighting with your significant other or life just isn’t going as expected… be mindful of the little things and embrace them in the moment. At the end of the (maybe really hard) day, we are so lucky to be here. To be living this life. To have our families. To have our friends. To have our health. To be surrounded by so much beauty. We may not be able to control all of the big things in life, but that’s what the little things are for: to remind us to be grateful. When life feels too big, focus on the little.
