Movie: Detroit
Format: Hulu
Personal rating: 7/10
Comments: The acting was really good but the story wasn’t at all what I expected. I knew it was going to be about the Detroit riots of 1967 but I didn’t realize it was going to focus on one specific incident. I just think because my expectations were different, I was sorta disappointed. However, I have a huge soft spot for Annapurna Pictures, the production company behind this film. Every single detail in their productions is acknowledged and perfected, including the details in Detroit.
Movie: A Beautiful Mind
Format: Netflix
Personal rating: 8/10
Comments: I hadn’t really seen anything starring Russell Crowe before but damn is he incredible. He is so insanely talented. I really enjoyed this movie and it also gave me an appreciation for Jennifer Connelly. The major plot twist in the movie really got me – I wasn’t expecting it at all. I was shocked to learn that the movie was based on a true story and made me love it even more.
Movie: Blood Diamond
Format: Netflix
Personal rating: 8/10
Comments: I love me some Leo. It was really good. I love when a book or movie comes full circle and this totally did. Jennifer Connelly was also in this and she was the perfect balance to Leo’s character.
Movie: The Prestige
Format: Netflix
Personal rating: 6/10
Comments: I will always appreciate an ending with twist and this had just that. I also love a good rivalry so it was cool to see just how far the two characters were willing to go. Hugh Jackman is the man but this wasn’t my favorite role of his. I also couldn’t really get past the time period and setting. And I don’t really like magic. But overall, it was decent.
Movie: Proof
Format: TV recording
Personal rating: 5/10
Comments: I love love love Jake Gyllenhaal and I am indifferent about Gwyneth Paltrow but the two just had no chemistry. It wasn’t horrible but it wasn’t great. I definitely will never watch it again.
Movie: A Simple Favor
Format: In theaters
Personal rating: 3/10
Comments: Do yourself a simple favor and don’t see this. IT WAS HORRIBLE. ABSOLUTELY HORRIBLE. I already don’t like Anna Kendrick and this movie made me dislike her even more. The plot was pointless and confusing and made no sense. The concept could have been so strong. There were bits and pieces that could have made for a killer mystery but instead it was immature, rushed yet dragged out, and just dumb. I love Blake Lively and her character was badass but the plot and the other characters really took away from how awesome she was. I would not recommend anyone watch this. It was based on a novel of the same name which had mixed reviews. I’m sure I would have enjoyed the book more but oh well.
Movie: Cinderella Man
Format: Hulu
Personal rating: 7/10
Comments: Another Russell Crowe movie, another winner. I’ve been watching a lot of boxing movies lately (aka the Rocky series) so I was really hesitant to watch this because I’m pretty much boxer-ed out. However, I am really glad I watched it. It was such a great underdog story and I love that it was based on a true story. Crowe definitely has a true talent for playing characters based on real people with real stories.
Movie: A Star is Born
Format: In theaters
Personal rating: 10/10
Comments: HOLY CRAP. This movie was INCREDIBLE. IN-FREAKIN-CREDIBLE. Cooper? Amazing. Gaga? Even more amazing. They both deserves Oscars. Holy crap. Goosebumps during the entire movie. It was raw and it was real. Gaga is meant to be in films. She is a m o v i e s t a r. And Cooper is so much more than a comedy actor. I knew this once I saw Burnt and American Sniper but this movie? Wow. Just wow. Best movie I have seen in a really long time. I don’t think I have ever seen a movie more than once in theaters. I would see this movie again. Tomorrow. And the next day. And the next.
Movie: Overboard
Format: TV recording
Personal rating: 7/10
Comments: It was so cute! It was nice and fun and light. I’m not much of a rom-com person and I guess it’s not really a com, but I enjoyed it! It came very highly recommended by a friend. I made her watch my fav, Now and Then, and she’s been urging me to watch this so I finally did. I’m thoroughly pleased. I’ve always known of Goldie Hawn because I’m a huge Kate Hudson fan but I never really saw anything with her in it. Now I want to see every movie ever that she’s in. And the chemistry between her and Kurt is unmistakable. No wonder they’ve been together all these years.
Movie: Children of the Corn
Format: Netflix
Personal rating: 5/10
Comments: Being surrounded by the all the cornfields in Ohio last weekend inspired me to watch this classic for the first time. It was also appropriate timing since Halloween is just a few weeks away. The movie was… corny (haha). I’m not into sci-fi at all, so the supernatural element or whatever just ruined it for me. Besides it being super corny, the acting wasn’t that great. Job was the best part of the whole movie. It’s considered a horror/thriller. I was neither horrified nor thrilled. It was lame but I could see how back in 1984, when it was released, that it could’ve been a “scary movie.”
